Hello Ewan,
Thank you for this brief interview with you as the writer / Programer of the game “Rise Of the Little Brother” ROTLB
Rob: A Little bit about yourself..
Ewan:This is my fourth game, and my second game in the Visual Novel genre. The first game was done a few years ago, and the tool I use for the VN games didn’t support Vista until some time after I published it. So I went to rework that game in Flash, and got some good reviews which led me to think it might be worth doing another VN.
Rob: How you came up with the concept of ROTLB
Ewan: After seeing the response to the Flash game, I talked with the fellow who runs Tycoon Games, and we both agreed it would be interesting to see what might happen a few years down the line in the same College. So ROTLB is a loose sequel to the original Senior Year/College Romance game. This time around, however, I wanted to take advantage of some of the things I’d learned about game programming, and the end result is a game that’s twice the size of the first game, and adds some different twists and turns to the mix.

Rob: Hurdles you have had to overcome to get the game functional
Ewan: Fortunately the RenPy tool creates native Linux, Mac, and Windows versions of games, so very few of the hurdles were technical. We did use a professional artist for the character art, and she had to create the characters in the middle of two moves. She was quite a trooper, though, and got us stuff when we needed it.
Rob: Any current involvement with the open source community.
Ewan: I used to maintain the FAQ for the ArgoUML folks, and I’ve worked a bit with the coLinux folks a few years ago to detail how to use coLinux to setup a RAID array of external disks under Windows.
Rob: Future Plans for ROTLB!
Ewan: TycoonGames and I have discussed doing a “premium” version of ROTLB that would add in a couple more characters – and might even include a dating sim engine. But that would probably have to wait until I complete the next game I’m working on, and will be based in part on how sales of the full version of the game go.
Thanks for the interview, and good luck with your site!
Thank you Ewan and the best of luck with your games.
